What is Granite?

Granite is an igneous rock.  Meaning that at one time during its development, it was melted like volcanic lava. However, unlike lava this melted rock never reached the surface. It remained trapped inside, where it gradually cooled and crystallized, resulting in a very consistent and speckled stone that ranges in various colours. Polished granite is a very durable stone, much solid than marble, making granite a very popular option for domestic and commercial purposes for many years.

What is Marble?

Marble is metamorphosed limestone, composed of fairly pure calcite (a crystalline form of calcium carbonate, CaCO3). It is broadly used for many purposes but mainly domestic use in bathrooms or decorative use throughout the home. Marble is a sensitive and natural material therefore requiring more consideration with general everyday use when installed in your home.

What is Engineered Stone?

Is a manufactured product composed of approximately 94% natural quartz and 6% resin, engineered stone is an extremely durable option. It is an ideal choice for low maintenance benchtops with its high abrasion and stain resistance, strength and versatility. Engineered stone is a popular choice because of its uniformity and wide range of colours and shades to suit any decor.

Care + Maintenance

Granite
While granite is one of the most resilient and beautiful elements of nature, care needs to be taken to prevent damage. If a spill occurs, wipe up immediately to avoid staining.  Sealers are designed to increase stain resistance and this may be applied on a clean dry granite surface every 6 months – 1 year.

Marble
Marble is a natural stone and should receive careful attention to prevent damage. If a spill occurs, wipe up immediately to avoid staining. Warm water and soap less cleaner are recommended for routine cleaning. Do not use harsh, acidic based or abrasive cleaners as this may cause damage to the marble surface.

Engineered Stone
Care must still be taken as although they are designed and produced to be heat, scratch and stain resistant, they are not heat, scratch and stain proof. Engineered stones are very easily maintained, for routine cleaning it has been recommend by the suppliers to use warm water with a mild detergent. There are also specially formulated stone cleaners available for direct purchase from the supplier, that are designed to protect and maintain the appearance of your benchtop.
